And so it begins…
Over the past few months since we started tossing around the idea of this project, we’ve received great feedback from friends in the community, and have met amazing people along the way. Our upcoming first event was sold out in under a week! We’ve added a few extra spots today, register here before it’s too late!
We can’t wait to meet you and start building this community. We thought we’d do a quick intro so you can learn a bit more about us…
Serena is a front-end developer and designer with a background in software development. She is passionate about mentoring and inspiring young females to explore fields of technology and it’s many different applications. The idea of starting a GDI chapter was born out of frustration from hearing a lot of talk about the lack of women in technology, but not seeing a lot of action being done to get more involved. Get your hands dirty and build something!
Gail is a PhD student in computer science at Carleton University, researching narrative, augmented reality, and educational games. One of her passions is teaching and outreach, and she especially loves showing girls and women how much fun programming and computer science actually is! For her, it’s not as much about the low percentage of women in CS, but rather how many are missing out on trying something might love for the wrong reasons. Outside of school, Gail enjoys everything from photography and scrapbooking to Taekwondo and snowboarding.
Barbora has a background in electrical engineering and physics. She has a wide range of experience working in radiation protection, particle physics, software development, to finance. From her experience, programming has played an integral part in every point of her career, and she believes that it is valuable to have an understanding of technology no matter what field you are in. -
